Liam calls for media pull out:
'Give the police – and us – some space' demands Hodge Hill MP

Liam Byrne MP today demanded a media pullout from Alum Rock, writing to BBC and Sky asking them to withdraw 24 hour news vans from the area.

Liam said:

“Alum Rock represents all that is best about Britain - tolerance, diversity, enterprise and an abhorrence of extremism.

“These arrests have caused profound shock. But now our natural anxieties are being enflamed by intrusive 24 hour media coverage, heightening fears with incessant speculation.

“Constituents have even told me about being offered cash for quotes.”

He added:

“The media has a right to report stories. But the police have a right to the space to do their job. We have a right to some space to deal with our shock without the spotlights and satellite vans. The national media must deal with this in a responsible way.

“The police have done an excellent job talking to our community - but they must now be allowed to keep it up along with their support for local families.

“I want to thank not just the police but also the local community leaders for everything they are doing to help make a difficult time easier.

“People must be allowed to get on and it is everyone’s responsibility to aid both the police and our community.”
