BYRNE UNCOVERS SCHOOL WAITING LIST FIASCO

Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, today wrote to Tony Howells, Head of Birmingham City Education service calling for action to tackle massive waiting lists for school places in some parts of Hodge Hill constituency. The call follows research carried out by Liam, which shows that the system is in chaos.

Free maps for 11 year olds - 2005

Ordnance Survey is repeating its Free maps for 11 year olds scheme this year.

A total of 769 559 map were issued in 2004 to 7,052 schools in Britain, raising awareness of local geography and aspects of citizenship.

All schools in Britain with Year 7 or Primary 7 pupils are eligible to join the scheme.

A big thank you to everyone who came to the Brockhurst Playing Fields last Thursday. It really gave the planning committee something to think about, and showed Tesco's that they can't take this community for granted.

BYRNE MEETS PM TO CALL FOR URGENT HELP FOR SOUTH ASIAN EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, this week met with Prime Minister Tony Blair to demand that the UK Government does everything possible to help the victims of the South Asian earthquake.

The news comes on the same day as International Development Secretary Hilary Benn announced aid that has so far been given to the stricken country.

'Byrne Brands Council Soft on Tesco'

Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, today branded Lib Dem Tory Birmingham City Council a soft touch on Tesco’s after it was revealed that the Council have refused to hold a site visit when the pitches are in use, and have scheduled a public meeting at a time when many people will be unable to attend.

'Residents and business unite behind MP campaign for Leyland Club Health Site'

Local campaigners have reacted angrily to Birmingham City Council’s refusal to rule our retail development on the former Leyland Club site, on Alum Rock Road. As a result, local health chiefs have been outbid and are now facing the prospect of sharing the site with the discount supermarket giant.

To celebrate her Golden Jubilee, The Queen announced a new, annual Award to recognise and reward excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community.

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service (formerly known as The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award) is given for outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who:

  • regularly devote their time to helping others in the community
  • improve the quality of life and opportunity for others
  • provide an outstanding service
