RESIDENTS SHOW UNITED FRONT AGAINST TESCO BID

Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill today urged local residents to show a united front against the Lib Dem / Tory Council’s decision to sell off Hodge Hill’s green soul for a fast buck.

At a fiery residents meeting on Thursday 18th May 2006, organised by local councillor Anita Ward and the local action group, residents expressed anger at Birmingham City Council’s decision to sell 17% of the Brockhurst Playing Fields to Tesco – despite the supermarket giant not yet having planning permission.

Cllr Gill Beddows gets straight to work
Local Hodge Hill resident Gill Beddows was duly elected councillor for Hodge Hill ward last Thursday 4th May, and promised to get straight to work for local residents’.

Gill said

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me in the local elections. The help and support I received from residents throughout the ward was amazing.

Park View tie makes the Despatch Box

Liam this week honoured Park View School in Washwood Heath by proudly sporting the school tie at the House of Common's despatch box.

The school presented the Hodge Hill MP with the tie when he came to open its business and enterprise centre.

Liam promised to wear it on an auspicious occasion and chose his first question and answer session as newly promoted police and security minister.

Liam commented “I thought it fitting that I should wear my new tie on my debut – not least because It felt like the first day of term!”

LIAM WINS REPRIEVE FOR POST OFFICE BUS

Liam has welcomed news that a free bus service to take residents from Chipperfield Road to the nearest Post Office on the Heathway has been saved thanks to his teams intervention.

The bus, provided by Tesco’s, is a lifeline for many elderly residents who were left without a local Post Office when the One Stop Shop that had housed a counter – was bought out by Tesco – who refused to keep the service in store.

Liam smashes personal best in Run for the Future
 
 
Liam knocked 10 minutes off his personal best time in the Stratford Half Marathon on Sunday, raising over £1000 pounds for victims of the Kashmir earthquake.

The race looked touch and go after he found his feet covered in blisters after 12 hours on the doorstep on Thursday. Not only was his office manager, Gill Beddows elected for Labour but a huge 2000 majority was returned in Washwood Heath.

Byrne appointed Police Minister
 

Hodge Hill MP, Liam Byrne, has been promoted to Minister of State for the police in Tony Blair's post local election Government reshuffle.

The father of three got the call from the Prime Minister late on Friday afternoon just as he was putting the finishing touches to a new blueprint for youth services. He arrived at the Home Office first thing Saturday and spent the day meeting the new Home Secretary and key officials.

Heathway demands back stolen cash

 

Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, today joined with local councillor Marje Bridle, shopkeepers and residents to demand cash back from the Lib Dem / Tory council for regeneration of the shopping centre at the Heathway in Shard End.

Liam and Shard End Councillor Marje Bridle have discovered that plans were ready to go out to tender over a month ago. But council bosses have let down local people by cutting funding at the last minute to pay for projects in other parts of the city.
