| LIAM WELCOMES SUPERMARKET INVESTIGATION |
| |
Liam has welcomed news that the Office of Fair Trading has signalled its intention to refer grocery retailers, including Tesco, to the Competition Commission for more detailed investigation, and has published a report detailing the scale of profits showing the size of the its analysis of the market for consultation prior to a final decision in April.
Groceries - defined as food, pet food, drinks, cleaning products, toiletries and household goods - account for nearly half of all retail sales. Total grocery sales in 2005 were around £95 billion, representing around 13 per cent of all household spending in the UK.
The OFT highlights ‘features of the market which… distort competition and harm consumers.’ |

| INDEPENDENT REPORT SLAMS GAPS IN BIRMINGHAM HOUSING PLAN |
| |
Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, today voiced his growing concerns about the Lib Dem/Tory administrations plans for the future of council housing in Birmingham, as an independent report identifies “critical gaps in policy and practice that need urgent closure”.
The report, by the Independent Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Council Housing in Birmingham, at the London School of Economics, suggests that the council’s current plan “denies the council additional government funding or other special resources to upgrade the decayed and unrepaired stock that blights many parts of the city and many tenants’ lives”. |

| BYRNE TAKES TENANTS FIGHT TO HOUSING MINISTER |
| |
Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, this week took up the case of council tenants with Housing Minister Yvette Cooper MP at a meeting demanded by Liam to discuss Birmingham City Council’s progress in securing Decent Homes across Hodge Hill.
The meeting follows Liam’s discovery that plans submitted by the Lib Dem / Tory coalition to bring council homes up to the Government’s Decent Homes standard, could be both unrealistic and unaffordable. The Council’s plans to upgrade council homes are dependent on increasing sales of council owned property by around 20 times the rate of sales made last year.......................

| COLEBOURNE PRE-SCHOOL UPDATE |
| |
Many local families contacted Liam last year about the potential closure of the pre school due to the re development of the Colebourne School site.
Liam wrote to Birmingham City Council and the Secretary of State on the pre-school's behalf, and lobbied hard to put pressure on the council to include the pre school in the new plans.
Liam was delighted to hear from the school headmistress Mrs Herrick, that it looks like the plans for the new school should include space for the pre school.
This is great news for the school, pre school, parents, and above all local children who will be the real winners when this exciting new school site is built.
Well done to everyone involved!

 |
 |
Above: examples of the effect illegal parking has on the grass verges. |
| |
Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, today demanded the Lib Dem / Tory administration at Birmingham City Council take action on the parking crisis in Hodge Hill. The campaign follows complaints from local residents’ at Liam’s regular residents’ meetings, and in his postbag every week – about a lack of parking locally.
Last month Liam summoned council chiefs to demand that they take more action to get a grip on the parking crisis. At the meeting Council bosses confessed that they didn’t even know how many new parking spaces are needed in the ward—a task which Liam and his team are preparing to take on themselves.
The council also admitted that very little parking enforcement is taking place to keep verges safe – despite it being a civil offence – and a responsibility of local government to enforce.
