Byrne criticises council for selling out to Tesco

Liam Byrne MP has criticised Birmingham City Council, who yesterday agreed to sell land from Brockhurst Road playing fields to Tesco - despite a ten year battle and fierce opposition from local residents, councillors and Liam Byrne MP.

The Hodge Hill MP, who has fought alongside residents to keep the Brockhurst Road playing fields for young people, today condemned the move.

Liam said:

"Our young people have been sold out twice by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition council. Not only have they sold the playing fields to a supermarket giant for an unwanted and unneeded store, they have agreed a paltry compensation sum.

Liam added:

"This sale is expected to generate millions for Tesco whilst our young people are being fobbed off with minimal compensation towards sport provision in the area.

"What our young people need is green space, not supermarkets."
